MEC CALLS ON COMMUNITIES TO HELP FIGHT CRIME

The MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari, is calling on North West communities to help the law enforcement to fight crime. Though certain categories of crimes went up, the Province is among the three that managed to bring figures of aggravating crimes.

“Together as a nation we can do more to combat the scourge of crime. Often our people see criminality taking place but do not want to be involved. This needless to say increase crime statistics”, said MEC Lehari.

Brits and Rustenburg in Bojanala reported higher figures of hijackings though there had in general been 520 cases less than in 2018/2019 financial year.

Truck hijackings particularly on N12, N14, N4, R24 and R512 are among other troublesome arterial routes.
The release of today’s crime statistics is once more a commitment that we are steadfast in our aim to halve violent crimes and gender based violence in the next decade”, said MEC Lehari.

Rustenburg and Potchefstroom especially Ikageng lead residential burglaries. Rustenburg is also among the top 30 areas in the country with high incidents of nonresidential burglaries.

“We encourage our people to report crime as it happens rather than waiting and only report much later”, appealed MEC Lehari.

These are the last annual statistics to be released as henceforth crime stats will be released quarterly.
